In a bid to unearth fresh leads, Australian authorities have disclosed previously unseen photographs connected to the case of British backpacker Peter Falconio, who was murdered 25 years ago. The release comes on the anniversary of the incident, which occurred on July 14, 2001, near Barrow Creek in the Northern Territory. Falconio's body has never been recovered, and police hope these images might spark new information from the public.
Details of the Crime
Peter Falconio, hailing from Huddersfield, was tragically shot on a remote highway stretch about 186 miles north of Alice Springs. His partner, Joanne Lees, managed to escape the attack, hiding in the surrounding scrubland for several hours before attracting the attention of passing motorists. The photographs now released include images of Lees shortly after the attack, showing her visibly distressed and the injuries she sustained, such as her wrists being bound with cable ties.
The Conviction of Bradley Murdoch
Bradley Murdoch, the man convicted for Falconio's murder, was serving a life sentence when he died of throat cancer last year at the age of 67. Murdoch never disclosed the location of Falconio's remains, a fact that continues to haunt those associated with the case. During his trial in 2005, it was revealed that Murdoch had pulled up alongside the couple’s vehicle, under the pretense of warning them about sparks emanating from their van. He then shot Falconio and attempted to abduct Lees, who narrowly escaped.

Northern Territory Police Force Commissioner Martin Dole highlighted the significance of the 25-year mark since the murder. He expressed hope that the new photographs would prompt memories or lead to a crucial tip-off. "While we have held the murderer accountable, our investigation remains incomplete without the discovery of Peter's remains," Dole stated.
Ongoing Search for Closure
The orange Volkswagen Kombi van that Falconio and Lees were traveling in was discovered abandoned near the scene of the crime. The newly released photos also include images of this vehicle and the crime scene itself. Despite a thorough investigation, Falconio's body remains undiscovered, and his family is still seeking closure.
In recent developments, police released bodycam footage of an interview conducted with Murdoch a week before his death, hoping he might reveal the location of Falconio's remains. "It is deeply regrettable that Murdoch passed away without disclosing any information about Peter’s whereabouts," Commissioner Dole remarked, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to conclude the investigation.
Reward and Appeal for Public Assistance
A reward of up to A$500,000 remains available for any information leading to the discovery of Falconio's remains. The police continue to encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward, as they pursue every possible avenue to resolve this case.
