Sydney Daycare Worker Accused of Extensive Child Abuse

Hamish Tait, a childcare worker in Sydney, has been charged with 329 offences related to the alleged abuse of 136 children over a span of 16 years. The allegations involve multiple daycare centres across the region.

Tait, aged 35, was first apprehended in July of the previous year. However, his identity was only disclosed recently after a court order, which had been in place to allow police time to identify victims and inform families, was lifted. He remains in custody as the case progresses.

Charges and Investigation Details

The charges against Tait are severe, including 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming individuals engaged in private acts without their consent. The police have managed to contact 121 families potentially affected by these actions, but the identification of 22 victims remains ongoing.

“Any form of child sexual abuse is confronting and horrific, even more so when the alleged perpetrator is an individual trusted with the care of our youth,” said Australian Federal Police (AFP) Acting Commander Luke Needham.

Scope of Alleged Offences

Tait's alleged offences occurred in five facilities, including four childcare centres and his own private business. Between 2009 and 2025, he worked at or attended 62 early childhood education facilities in Sydney, primarily in the city's north-west. To assist families, police have created a website listing the centres where Tait was employed.

The legal accusations also include 22 counts of aggravated use of a child under 14 years for creating child abuse material and 18 counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under 10 years. Investigators first connected Tait to illegal online activities in June last year, leading to a raid on a property in Glossodia, near Sydney, where incriminating materials were discovered.

Broader Context of Daycare Abuse Cases

This case is part of a troubling trend in Australia concerning allegations of child abuse within daycare centres. The public has been particularly alarmed by recent high-profile cases, such as that of Ashley Paul Griffith, who admitted to 307 offences in 2024, and the situation involving Joshua Dale Brown, which led to authorities recommending widespread testing for sexually transmitted diseases among children in Victoria.
