Widespread Protests Erupt Over Power Outages
On Tuesday evening, residents in various parts of Cuba staged protests by banging pots to voice their dissatisfaction with the latest nationwide power outage. This marks the third such incident this year, intensifying the public's frustration in the Communist-run nation.
Fuel Shortages and US Sanctions
The persistent fuel shortages in Cuba, largely attributed to stringent US sanctions and an effective oil blockade, have exacerbated the power crisis. Even those with generators struggle to find fuel to operate them during outages.
While officials reported that power had been restored in most areas, many citizens continued to demand the restoration of electricity in regions still affected. In some rural areas, power cuts have lasted up to 70 hours, while urban locations have experienced planned outages of up to 30 hours.
Government and International Reactions
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel addressed the growing discontent among citizens, acknowledging the severe shortages of essential goods and services including transportation, food, and medicine. He urged the public to direct their frustration towards the US government, whom he blamed for the power shortages.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the United Nations, Michael Waltz, criticized the Cuban government, urging it to "change your ways and turn the lights back on for your people." He suggested that power is always available for the "Cuban dictatorship."
Escalating Tensions Between Cuba and the US
The already strained US-Cuban relations have worsened since the beginning of the year. The Trump administration imposed new sanctions and an oil blockade, further tightening the economic noose around Cuba. Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's seizure by US forces in January, a close ally of Cuba, has also contributed to the tensions.
Cuba's foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez, accused the US of engaging in "multi-dimensional, non-conventional warfare" against the island nation, claiming that this approach has intensified over the past seven months.
Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts
Despite the public exchange of criticisms, diplomatic discussions between the two countries continue. While the Cuban foreign minister reported no significant progress, he expressed willingness to engage in dialogue based on mutual respect and non-interference.
The situation remains tense as both nations navigate the complexities of their diplomatic relationship amidst ongoing outages and sanctions.
