Major Wildfire Near Paris Triggers Emergency Response
A significant wildfire has erupted in the Fontainebleau forest, located south of Paris, prompting the dispatch of two firefighting planes to contain the blaze. Described as being of 'exceptional scale' and highly aggressive, the fire has disrupted traffic on France's primary north-south highway, coinciding with the summer's first major holiday weekend.
According to local authorities, the fire had consumed approximately 800 hectares as of Monday morning. The affected area is situated about 60 kilometers southeast of Paris. This incident marks the first deployment of firefighting aircraft from the typically hotter southern regions of France to the Paris area, as reported by Eric Brocardi from France's national federation of firefighters. In addition to the planes, two firefighting helicopters and an observation aircraft are also involved in the operation, as noted by Agence-France-Presse.

Earlier in the weekend, another fire obstructed a highway leading east from Paris and caused disruptions to the high-speed train service heading to southern France. SNCF, the French rail company, reported delays of up to six hours for trains arriving at or departing from Paris's Gare de Lyon station.
This wildfire comes amidst the third heatwave of the year affecting the Paris region, part of a broader trend of record-breaking temperatures across Europe this summer. The intense heat has necessitated the temporary shutdown of three nuclear power plants to prevent the release of warm cooling water into already heated rivers. Additionally, the Tour de France cycling event shortened one of its stages by 30 kilometers due to temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius.

The scorching temperatures have led to widespread wildfires across the continent. Notably, in Spain, a devastating fire in Almeria resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, making it one of the deadliest in the country's history. In the UK, a substantial wildfire in North Wales was declared a major incident, with emergency services working to control fires throughout England and Wales.
