Iran Warns of Trade Route Closures
In response to recent US military actions, Iran has declared its intention to block additional trade routes in the region. This announcement follows the launch of new strikes by the United States targeting Iranian military positions.
Strait of Hormuz at the Center
The Revolutionary Guards of Iran have stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States ceases its so-called "acts of aggression." This strategic waterway is crucial for global oil transportation, and its closure has already led to increased oil prices due to reduced tanker traffic.
In addition to the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has also threatened to shut down other oil and gas export channels in the region, although specific routes were not identified.
US Military Actions
The United States Central Command (Centcom) reported a series of drone, air, and naval strikes on Wednesday morning. These operations targeted Iran's coastal defenses and missile sites, aiming to limit Iran's capacity to threaten commercial shipping in the area.
The strikes were part of a broader US strategy to apply pressure on Iran, following previous operations that lasted several hours overnight.
US Political Stance
President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to intensify military actions if Iran does not engage in diplomatic discussions. Trump also indicated that a proposed toll in the Strait of Hormuz, initially set at 20%, might be replaced by substantial trade and investment agreements with Gulf nations.
International Reactions
Earlier threats by the US to target Iranian civilian infrastructure were met with criticism from the United Nations. The UN's human rights chief at the time, Volker Türk, reminded the international community that targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure constitutes a war crime under international law.
Renewed Blockades and Regional Tensions
