Israeli Airstrike Claims Lives in Northern Gaza
In a recent military action, an Israeli airstrike targeting a police post in northern Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, including a senior police officer and a woman, as reported by health and police authorities in the region.
Details of the Incident
Eyewitnesses reported to the BBC that an Israeli drone launched four missiles at a police post near a bustling market in the Jabalia area. The interior ministry, run by Hamas in Gaza, condemned the strike as a "massacre" and confirmed that Col Mohammed Marwan Salem, the head of the local police station, was among the deceased.
The Israeli military identified Salem as the head of military security for Hamas's Central Jabalia Battalion. It also stated that three other individuals, referred to as "terrorists," were killed in the attack, naming them as Abdul Malik al-Jabin, Ghassan al-Daqas, and Yaman Abu Obeida, with the first two identified as police officers.
Reactions and Additional Casualties
Casualties were transported to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. Mohammed Moussa, uncle of one deceased officer, claimed his nephew was a civilian on duty, patrolling in a civilian vehicle when targeted. "I want to understand: what was the purpose of targeting him?" he questioned in a statement to Reuters.
Additional fatalities occurred in Southern Gaza, where an airstrike in Khan Younis resulted in the death of a man and injuries to three others. The Israeli military claimed the target was a Hamas operative. In Rafah, a 10-year-old boy named Muataz Abu Shaar was reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire. His aunt, Suzan Abu Shaar, expressed grief and called for an end to the violence.
Ongoing Tensions and Ceasefire Violations
Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of frequent ceasefire violations since the agreement took effect last October. According to Gaza's health ministry, at least 1,110 people have been killed by Israeli fire since then, while the Israeli military reports four of its soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks.
The conflict was initially sparked by a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages. Israel's military response in Gaza has, according to local health officials, resulted in over 73,230 fatalities.
