During a NATO summit held in Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer with a personalized revolver, accompanied by live ammunition. This gift, engraved with Starmer's name, was part of a series of similar presents given to each national leader in attendance.
Handling of the Gift
The revolver has not been transported back to the United Kingdom, remaining instead with British officials stationed in Turkey. Plans are in place to decommission the firearm before it is eventually returned to the UK, ensuring it is no longer functional. Despite Erdogan waiving export restrictions on the gift, it was not brought into the UK due to legal prohibitions on importing live firearms.
Downing Street has opted not to release photographs of the revolver, maintaining discretion regarding the unusual diplomatic exchange.
Outcomes of the NATO Summit
In addition to the exchange of gifts, Sir Keir Starmer signed a defense agreement with President Erdogan aimed at enhancing intelligence sharing between the UK and Turkey. After the summit, Sir Keir expressed confidence in the strengthened unity among NATO allies, emphasizing its importance amidst ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
"This summit has been productive. We have achieved the unity we sought, which is crucial given the current geopolitical challenges," Sir Keir remarked.
This event marks one of Sir Keir's final international engagements, following his recent announcement of resignation.
