Emergency Landing of F-16 Fighter Jet at Greek Airport
An F-16 fighter jet belonging to the Hellenic Air Force made an emergency landing at Zakynthos airport, one of Greece's busiest during the summer season. The incident occurred around 13:45 local time (10:45 GMT) on Thursday when the aircraft was on a training mission.
Technical Fault Leads to Emergency
The air force reported a technical fault as the reason for the emergency landing. Fortunately, the pilot emerged unscathed from the incident. An investigation is currently underway to understand the exact cause of the malfunction.
According to Greek media, the aircraft received a warning of an onboard fire before landing. Upon touchdown, the jet caught fire on the runway, triggering an immediate response from firefighters and airport staff. The aircraft landed without deploying landing gear, causing it to skid across the runway for several meters, as reported by Greece's Kathimerini newspaper, although the air force has yet to confirm this detail.
Immediate Response and Delays
Videos circulated on social media platforms showed the aircraft engulfed in flames as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. The fighter jet was part of the 335 Squadron, 116th Combat Wing, stationed at Araxos Air Base in western Greece.
The incident led to the temporary closure of the runway, resulting in significant delays. All flights scheduled for Thursday experienced delays, with departures postponed until 21:00 local time. This disruption comes at the onset of the summer vacation period, a peak time for tourists, mostly from the UK, visiting the island.
Efforts to Restore Airport Operations
A specialized team from the air force is expected to arrive on the Ionian island to remove the jet from the runway, allowing normal airport operations to resume.
