This deal, hailed by Trade Secretary Peter Kyle as the UK's most significant services trade agreement, will allow British citizens to use electronic gates at Swiss airports for expedited passage.
Removal of Roaming Charges
A key component of the agreement is the elimination of mobile roaming charges for visitors from both nations. This change is expected to benefit both tourists and professionals, improving connectivity and communication during travel.
Boost to UK Exports
The UK government anticipates that the deal will increase exports to Switzerland by approximately £5.2 billion annually in the long term. Currently, Switzerland ranks as the UK's sixth-largest market for services exports, with over £30 billion in trade recorded in 2025.
Permanent Service Mobility Arrangement
The agreement also solidifies a service mobility deal, allowing businesses to operate in each country for up to 90 days without the need for a work permit. Originally set to expire in 2029, this provision is now permanent, facilitating easier cross-border business operations.
Integration of E-Gates
British passport holders will soon be able to use e-gates at Zurich airport by the end of the year, with similar measures expected at Geneva and Basel airports. This initiative is separate from Switzerland's adoption of the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES), which will also enable UK citizens to use EU e-gates.
Facilitated Professional Transfers
The agreement permits UK employees to work in Switzerland for up to five years without undergoing rigorous economic needs assessments. Professions such as lawyers, accountants, and architects stand to gain significantly from this provision.
Context and Future Prospects
This agreement follows recent UK trade deals with countries including the United States, India, and South Korea, as well as the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union. It coincides with the conclusion of Sir Keir Starmer's tenure as Prime Minister, with Andy Burnham set to succeed him.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the agreement's role in simplifying business operations and travel, saying it will help British firms more effectively offer their expertise in Switzerland, supporting domestic jobs and investments.
Coordination with EU Border Systems
In related developments, UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has engaged in discussions with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, regarding the EU's new EES border system.
